Ja’Rod Morris, founder of the Atlanta-based book club Black Men Read, didn’t have to form a new group. “ The truth is, we have been having these conversations about police brutality,” he told HuffPost. Though the club was designed for literary discussion rather than activism, any space where Black people gather, he said, is a good space for political mobilization. The Japanese are world famous for their ancient wisdom and practices. Their rich culture stems from deep observations about life and people, churning out the most incredible sayings that inspire.

People even argue whether the folktale is Chinese or Japanese. My two kids also love the breathless tongue twister of Tikki’s full name. But I’m happy to report that thirty-some years later, there are some truly great books about the various Asian cultures — almost all with a focus on family and food. (But mostly food.) Beginner Books.   If there is one book that I would single out as THE seminal Asian American coming of age story, it would be The Great Wall of Lucy Wu. What is unique about this story compared to all others is that the Chinese American family is an assimilated 3rd generation family without the usual Asian .

This includes books like Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime, Battle Royale, Memoirs of a Geisha, and others. The Japanese Novel and Light Novel Book Club is the sister group to Shoujo Manga Book Club, Shounen Manga Book Club, and Josei and Seinen Readers(18+ only).

My favorite book club suggestions. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi – This memoir published after the author’s early death from lung cancer will basically rip your heart out, but also Asian family reading groups book you so glad to be alive.

In the past, we’ve done family reunion book clubs and if we did another one, this would be in my top three book club suggestions for sure.
